In 1987, Americans tied for first place in Madagascar and in 1992 they won the Team Spirit Award in 6uyana. In 1 993, Mike Hussey and Tim Hensley traveled to Malaysia for the thirteenth Camel Trophy. This is the story of their journey and dream of winning for their country. Of course, not all Land Rover adventures are as competitive and arduous as the Camel Trophy. With the enthusiastic off-road adventurer in mind, the final segment of this video will take you to the Land Rover Driving Academy in Aspen, Colorado. At the Academy, students spend a week along the Continental Divide learning advanced driving techniques in the beautiful and challenging terrain of the Rocky Mountains. Camel Trophy 93 circumnavigated the largely unexplored jungle of Sabah, Malaysia. Stopping to build a two-story ecological monitoring station in the Malibu Basin, or "Lost World", the teams provided a permanent base for international scientists studying the region. US teammates Tim Hensley and Michael Hussey were the first American to ever win the coveted Camel Trophy.

The Route for 1994 was not only the first year to include women, but also the longest and most varied in terrain and climate conditions during the event's 15 year history. It rose from steamy jungles to arid passes in the Andes and descended to the Atacama desert in Chile before finally making its way to the Pacific.

Camel Trophy-Mundo Maya 1995

Each year the Camel Trophy Adventure seeks out a thousand miles or more of the world's toughest four wheeling terrain for what truly is an adventure of a lifetime.

A record twenty teams battled 140 degree days and long-forgotten jungle tracks as they navigated their way through the Central America Mundo Maya (World of the Maya) countries of Belize, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras. For the first time, the US Camel Trophy team included a woman, Daphne Greene, who along with teammate Jim Swett and the rest of the Camel Trophy convoy, participated in an archaeological survey of a previously uncharted Maya site.

La Ruta Maya - An Expedition of Discovery was an historic, first-ever effort to return replicas of ancient Maya artifacts to their original archaeological sites, deep in the Central American tropical forest of Belize.
Sponsored by Land Rover North America, Inc. in cooperation with the La Ruta Maya Conservation Foundation and in consultation with The Nature Conservancy, the Expedition was conceived with several specific cultural, ecological and archaeological objectives in mind, including:
  • Reproduction of Maya hieroglyphic monuments that were removed from Belize in the 1950s;
  • Transportation of these Maya artifact replicas to native sites for further study;
  • Examination of the growth of eco-tourism and its impact on both the tropical forest and the cultural and economic development of the region; and
  • Investigation of the possible causes of Maya decline with a view toward the survival of our own modern culture.
